Partial Hospitalization Program

Partial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program provides clients with a supportive option as they transition from an inpatient drug rehab center in NH. An intensive program that focuses on several components. This type of treatment is ideal for the client who is stepping down from a residential setting. It can also be a good choice for those who have a strong support system in place at home and who need an alternative to inpatient rehab.

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program?

An outpatient service, a partial hospitalization program — sometimes shortened to PHP — offers an intensive clinical experience that does not require clients to live on-site. Instead, clients spend the day engaging in the various aspects of the program while going home to sleep. In most cases, there is regular programming five days a week. Although there could be special or additional options available over the weekend.

Elements of a Partial Hospitalization Program

Just like other substance use treatment programming, a high-quality facility tailors each element to meet the individual client’s needs. This personalized plan is used to guide and measure the client’s progress as they move through the partial hospitalization program.

Some possible elements that are typically part of this outpatient treatment option include:

  • Group therapy

A successful PHP will have a strong foundation based on group therapy. Led by a trained member of the clinical team, there are usually multiple group therapy sessions offered throughout the day.

The primary purpose of integrating group therapy into PHP is to give the client the opportunity to interact with others. These sessions also offer a structured and safe environment. In addition, they encourage the practice of communication, interpersonal, and other life skills that can contribute to their recovery.

  • Medication management

The addition of certain medication into the treatment plan of clients who are coping with dual diagnosis disorders and/or those who are struggling with an addiction to a certain substance can be beneficial to them. In order to manage those medications, a client might need to see a member of the nursing staff or a psychiatrist while they are participating in the PHP.

  • Family therapy

Because substance use disorder — along with the dual diagnosis issues that often accompany it — affect many others beyond the client themselves, family therapy can help them cope. In addition, these sessions can assist family members in providing the support clients need to continue their recovery.

  • Individual therapy

When they participate in individual therapy, clients are able to benefit from the one-on-one experience. This is with addiction counselors or other therapists. Not only can they celebrate their successes on a more personal level, but the safety and privacy of individual therapy allow them to feel comfortable enough to bring up experiences, concerns, and issues that they might not otherwise want to talk about in a group.
